IDP are hosting a new programme to help parents of children who have ADHD
This autumn Inishowen Development Partnership (IDP) is kicking off its Sláintecare Healthy Communities Parents Plus (PP) programmes with a new ADHD children’s programme.
The ADHD programme is a new programme which addresses the needs of parents of children with ADHD aged six to 12 years and helps them to support their child through life.
The course facilitators will help parents support their child with ADHD, understand the challenges – and strengths, manage behaviour and emotional problems, build self-esteem and confidence and reduce stress.
As part of the programme, facilitators will also discuss the role of medication and treatments and help with educational challenges which may arise.
The first of the Inishowen groups of the PP ADHD children’s programme will begin in the Pastoral Centre in Carndonagh.
However, parents are firstly invited to attend an informational coffee morning to find out more about the programme and meet the community facilitators. This will take place in the Pastoral Centre in Carn on Thursday, September 26 from 10am – 12pm.
Patricia Lee, IDP Team Lead on the Sláintecare Healthy Communities team, said speaking with parents and linking with the team at CAMHs (Children and adolescents mental health), the need to support parents of children with ADHD has been identified.
She explains that the parenting programme is flexible and can be delivered to small groups or with individuals over an 8 week timeframe.
“We would encourage any parent who has a child with ADHD – where they have received an official diagnosis or not – to attend our coffee morning on Thursday September 26th,” said Patricia.
“This could be an opportunity to meet other parents as well as talking to the course facilitators and finding out more about what is involved.”
