Miserable Donegal forecast will see localised flooding and thundery bursts later

Donegal is set for a bleak August Bank Holiday on the weather front, with a Met Éireann weather warning in place.

Donegal is one of five western counties with a yellow warning - moderate weather - valid from Sunday, August 4, at 1pm for 24 hours till Monday, August 5. The other affected areas are Clare, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

Sunday will start as a mostly cloudy day with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, with more persistent rain developing during the afternoon, heaviest in the west with localised flooding and thundery bursts possible. Highest temperatures of 17 to 19 degrees with moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds developing, strong or very strong near coasts.

Further outbreaks of rain overnight, heaviest and most persistent in the west of the province with a continued possibility of localised flooding and thundery bursts. Becoming largely dry in the east though with just a little patchy light rain or drizzle. Mild and humid with temperatures not falling below 13 to 17 degrees with moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds.

On Monday, a band of rain lying over the west will continue to produce some heavy or thundery falls with the localised flooding likely. Through the morning and afternoon, the rain will track eastwards, clearing into the Irish Sea by the evening. Good sunny spells and isolated showers will follow from the west. Breezy at first with moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds, easing mostly light westerly as the rain clears. Highest temperatures of 18 to 21 degrees.
