Cockhill Celtic to be given civic reception

Cockhill Celtic are through to the FAI Intermediate Cup final

Cockhill Celtic will be given a civic reception to celebrate their history making run to the FAI Intermediate Cup final.

The Inishowen side face Cork's Rockmount in next month's showpiece in the Aviva Stadium.

Despite winning nine straight Ulster Senior League titles in a row, Cockhill have never managed to reach the Intermediate final in its history.

At Monday's full meeting of Donegal County Council, councillors voted in favour of giving Cockhill a civic reception following a motion from local councillor Rena Donaghey.

“Cockhill Celtic have many significant wins throughout their journey,” Cllr Donaghey said. “They have for years been a high-ranking football team with a rich history in intermediate football.

“They won their first Ulster Senior League title in 2010 and have won it nine times now, heading for 10 in a row since 2013.

“They have also qualified for the 1 st round of the FAI senior cup and have also won numerous cup finals along the way.

“Cockhill Celtic now look forward to the FAI Intermediate Cup Final against Rockmount, Cork on April 23. Rockmount Athletic Football Club, the Club where Irish Legend Roy Keane began his football career.

“Already many of our diaspora are booked to come home for the final kick off, from Boston and various parts of America, from Canada, London and from many parts of the world for the excitement, and to support the team.

“I am delighted to have been associated with Cockhill Celtic Football Club for over 30 years and I believe it is fitting that the team be honoured in the County House in Lifford by a civic reception, to acknowledge this significant and historic win for county Donegal against the best in Ireland.”
