Kevin Jordan in action for Finn Harps
Buncrana native Kevin Jordan played a key role as the Irish Colleges and Universities team secured a dramatic 2-1 victory against the French University side in a friendly match held in Nantes.
The decisive moment came in added time when Michael McCarthy, a defender for Cobh Ramblers and a student at Mary Immaculate College, scored the winner.
The match was tightly contested, with limited chances for either side. The French team dominated possession and took the lead just before the half-hour mark, capitalising on a defensive lapse by the Irish from a 30-yard free kick.
However, Aaron Doran from Maynooth University struck a composed equaliser just before half-time, ensuring the Irish went into the break on level terms.
The second half was evenly matched, with the French coming closest when a shot was deflected for a corner. Irish head coach Johnny McDonnell made full use of his substitutes in search of a winner, and his tactical adjustments paid off late on.
Kevin Jordan’s long throw found Michael McCarthy in the box, and the substitute defender made no mistake, securing a hard-fought victory for the visitors.
Jordan, who appeared in eight matches for Finn Harps during the 2024 League of Ireland First Division campaign, signed a two-year contract extension with the club in September. The 21-year-old had spent much of the season recovering from injury but returned strongly in the latter stages.
Before joining Finn Harps in 2022, Jordan played for Buncrana Hearts. He is currently a third-year student at ATU Donegal in Letterkenny, studying for a BSc in Sports and Exercise with Physical Education.
