The Ireland schoolboys team that secured a 3-0 victory away to Wales
Carndonagh Community School student Oisin Cooney was in goals this evening as the Ireland schoolboys team secured a 3-0 victory away to Wales in their final Centenary Shield game at the Old Road ground.
Loreto Milford student James McAteer was also on the squad and made an appearance on the 85th minute, but by that stage the match was over with Ireland running out deserving winners.
Ollie Horgan from St Eunan’s College is part of the team’s coaching staff as is Oisin McMenamin from St Columba’s College, Stranorlar.
Ireland took an early lead on the 13th minute when Wales accidentally knocked an own goal into their net.
Cooney would be called into action 20 minutes before the break when he pulled off a superb save to deny Wales an equaliser.
Summerhill’s Daire Patton would double Ireland’s lead to leave it 2-0 at the half-time break before Temple Carrig pupil Hugh Parker finished the contest on 55 minutes by making it 3-0.
Cooney came through the ranks at Clonmany Shamrocks and the Finn Harps Academy and made his debut against Bray Wanderers back in October when he signed a two-year deal with Darren Murphy’s side that will see the teenager stay with the Ballybofey club until late 2025.
