Four players from Donegal were included in the Sligo Rovers team with a fifth coming on as a substitute, but the Bit O'Red were beaten by Athlone Town in the semi-final, played in front of a record crowd at The Showgrounds

There was Women’s FAI Cup semi-final disappointment for Sligo Rovers’ Donegal contingent on Saturday.

Athlone Town advanced to the final thanks to a 4-0 win over Sligo at The Showgrounds. The game was played in front of a crowd of 1,121 - the biggest ever hosted by the Sligo Rovers women’s team, beating the 965 previous best.

Player of the Match Maddie Gibson sent Athlone on their way with a brace of goals in the first half.

Redcastle’s Eimear Lafferty - a recent recruit to the Bit O’Red - was included in Sligo’s starting XI. Buncrana sisters Jodie Loughrey and Keri Loughrey and Emma Doherty, another who hails from Buncrana.

Paula McGrory added to the strong Buncrana connecting when coming on for Leah Kelly in the 67th minute.

By then, it was already game, set and match for Athlone.

Gibson riffled home a 28th minute penalty and she added a second before half-time.

Jesi Lynne Rossman scored Athlone’s third with Roisin Molloy netting the fourth.

Doherty did have a good chance early on, but Rossman blocked her shot on goal.
