William O’Connor has been confirmed as UCD’s manager-in-waiting.
UCD will be relegated from the League of Ireland Premier Division if they don’t beat Shamrock Rovers on Friday night and the club has confirmed the forthcoming departure of Andy Myler.
Buncrana man O’Connor will take over from Myler following the conclusion of the 2023 campaign.
O’Connor has been the assistant manager to Myler since May 2021 when he was recruited from his role as Shelbourne Under-19 manager.
A woodwork teacher at Balbriggan Community School, O’Connor previously worked as a coach on Ollie Horgan’s backroom staff at Finn Harps.
The former Cockhill Celtic defender will succeed Myler at UCD, for whom relegation is now a mere formality.
Myler took the reigns in 2020 and they won promotion to the top flight via the play-offs in 2021. Last year, UCD managed to stay in the Premier Division.
UCD paid tribute to Myler in a statement, saying: “The club wishes to express it’s thanks to Andrew for his tireless work since being appointed in 2019 and wishes to draw special attention to his exceptional successes in his time as Manager.
“He has played an integral role in the development of the club’s talent since his appointment and leaves with the best wishes and thanks from all associated with the club.”
O’Connor, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence, has also worked with the Republic of Ireland schools team.
