Cockhill Celtic, the 2022/23 FAI Intermediate Cup finalists, will drop to junior football next season with hopes of a revival of the Ulster Senior League now gone.
Cockhill, who won ten USL titles in a row, lost out to Rockmount on penalties in the Intermediate Cup final at the Showgrounds in May.
However, Gavin Cullen’s side will not now get a chance at another tilt in that competition.
The five-team USL has been on life support for some time, but with the plug now pulled the first teams of Cockhill Celtic, Bonagee United and Letterkenny Rovers will all play in their respective junior grades.
Cockhill Celtic will play in the Jackie Crossan Premier Division of the Inishowen League. Cockhill Youths, who were in the top flight of the Inishowen League last season, will now go to Division One.
Bonagee United and Letterkenny Rovers will not get a taste of top flight action as they go to the Donegal League. Both clubs already had teams set to play in Division One next season and Donegal League officials have decreed that that remains.
The Dry Arch Park and Leckview Park clubs had hoped to take their place in an extended Premier Division in the 2023/24 season, but that has not transpired with the Sunday League to comprise three Divisions of ten teams each, retaining the status quo.
Both Bonagee and Letterkenny will enter teams in the Saturday League, which will have seven new teams for next season.
That includes a new entrant in Erne Wanderers, who have reapplied. Erne withdrew from the Donegal League in 2017, but will be back in the Saturday League ranks.
Applications from Fanad United, Drumkeen United, Gweedore United and Lagan Harps have been conditionally accepted by the Donegal League.
In early August, the Donegal league will meet with its clubs. The Saturday League will have three Divisions and the structure will be decided in consultation with participating clubs.
The Donegal League season will kick off on the weekend ending September 3. In a change to traditional scheduling, the season will get underway with League action.
The Brian McCormick Cup and Voodoo Venue Cup will not commence until January and will have one weekend per month dedicated to each subsequent round with the final to take place in May.
