Finn Harps just didn't take their chances - Dave Rogers

Finn Harps boss Dave Rogers.

Dave Rogers says Finn Harps have to show more teeth in front of goal if they’re to start picking up points.

It again took a Ryan Rainey spot kick to put Rogers’ men on the board away to Athlone Town on Friday night. And while it was a goal that put the visitors in front, they eventually suffered a 3-1 loss.

He said: “I’m disappointed, disappointed for the boys but if you don’t take chances and give away sloppy goals you get punished. Especially against a team like Athlone, we watched them last week we done our homework, we knew where the danger would come from.

“We spoke about the positivity of going in at half time and keeping a clean sheet but when you concede again early in the second half you’re on the back foot. We are creating chances but at the same time we have to be careful not to concede. At the moment we are conceding too many goals”.

Harps found themselves under the cosh early on but worked themselves into matters in good enough fashion. Rogers said going in, in front was reward for that. However, he admits it was frustrating to lose a goal, just minutes after the restart.

“The early warning signs were there but we regrouped in the last 20 minutes of the first half, there was only one team that looked like scoring and that was ourselves. Credit to Athlone they played to their strengths but for us it’s about getting it right and getting back on the training pitch and working hard.

“We are not going to be a negative team and we are creating chances but we have got to take them. I thought in the second half we were a bit all over the place, we have got to stay with the runners or we get punished”.
