Roma McLaughlin from Greencastle is flying to Denmark to play professionally for Fortuna Hjørring

Roma McLaughlin has signed an 18-month professional contract with Fortuna Hjørring in Denmark.

The 24-year-old from Greencastle spent the last four years at Central Connecticut State University in the United States, where she helped the team win the NEC title four times. She was also named as the NEC Midfielder of the Year twice and was selected for the All-America on two occasions.

The former Moville Community School student, Greencastle FC and Moville Celtic midfielder previously played domestically with Peamount United, where she was named as WNL Young Player of the Year in 2015, before joining Shelbourne in 2017 and also lining out for Sion Swifts.

McLaughlin was first capped by the Republic of Ireland in 2016 and was part of the squad in October, when a goal from Milford native Amber Barrett in a 1-0 victory over Scotland sealed a place at this summer's Fifa Women's World Cup finals.

Fortuna Hjørring are currently in third place in the Danish top flight, the Kvindeligaen, and McLaughlin will train with her teammates for the first time this coming Monday.
