A new initiative between Gaelscoil Bhun Cranncha and St Oran’s National School, Cockhill, is bringing pupils together to enjoy games through the Irish language.
The programme, which involves children from 3rd to 5th class in both schools, aims to promote the use of Irish in a fun and engaging way.The first session took place on Friday, March 14, a fitting date as it falls within Seachtain na Gaeilge, the annual celebration of the Irish language and culture.

Pupils from St Oran’s had the opportunity to experience Irish as a living language, while their peers from Gaelscoil Bhun Cranncha enjoyed using their bilingualism in a practical and enjoyable setting. During the play session, the children participated in a variety of games and activities, all conducted through Irish. T
he initiative is designed to build confidence and enthusiasm for the language, encouraging children from St Oran’s to see Irish as more than just a classroom subject. At the same time, Gaelscoil pupils benefit from using their language skills in a social and interactive manner.
Teachers from both schools hailed the event as a great success, with plans already in place for further gatherings. They hope this partnership will continue to strengthen the use of Irish among young learners and foster a positive attitude towards bilingualism.
With its strong emphasis on fun and engagement, this initiative is sure to leave a lasting impact on the students and their relationship with the Irish language.
