Donegal quartet advance to Irish semi-finals

Donegal quartet advance to Irish semi-finals

Jack Boyle has his hand raised in victory at the weekend.

The National Championships for 14-15 and 16 year old boys and girls got underway in Dublin at the weekend with several Donegal boxers in action.

Taylor Parke of Raphoe Boxing Club and Kerry Brown, representing Convoy BC, were among the winners.

Jack Boyle from Dunfanaghy BC and Carrigart’s Eddie McBride also recorded wins.

They will join another eight Donegal boxers in this weekend’s semi-finals: Conan Kearney (St Bridget’s, Clonmany), Shaun Doohan and Carys McFadden (Dunfanaghy), Isla Larkin (Letterkenny), Ellis O’Donnell and Aleshal Mullis Boyle (Dungloe) and Daniel Krygtski (Illies Golden Gloves).

On Saturday, in a Junior 1 quarter-final at 46kgs, Raphoe’s ‘Blonde Bomber’ Parke defeated Adam Clarke from Canal BC on a 4-1 split decision.

Boyle blasted his way to a split decision win against Henri Seiler, of the Monkstown BC in Dublin, with the Dunfanaghy puncher claiming a 4-1 split from the judges in a June 2 85kgs quarter-final bout.

Brown took a unanimous decision against Anjoliea Maughan (Ballybrack) in her Junior 2 60kgs contest. Brown showed real resolve to hit back after losing the opening round.

On the opening night of action at the National Stadium on Friday, McBride overcame Aglish’s Ryan Nolan, taking a 4-1 split decision.

Brian Anderson lost out to James McCarthy (Urlingford) in a Junior 1 63kgs quarter-final, while his club-mate Eunan Friel was beaten by Ballinamore’s Paul Lavin in a Junior 2 48kgs quarter-final.

Jack Anderson of Twin Towns lost out to Olympic’s Anthony Stokes in a Boy 4 quarter-final at 50kgs and, in a. 57kgs quarter-final in the Boy 4 competition, Carndonagh’s Colm Callaghan came out on the wrong end of a 4-1 split against Wade Passfield (Dunboyne).

There was no joy for Caoimhin Connolly, a recently crowned youth champion, who saw Kurt Kinsella, a Monsktown boxer, get his hand raised after earning a 4-1 split decision from the arbitrators at ringside.

Derryveagh’s David Tennyson lost out to Brodric Abudiore (Jobstown) in his 63kgs quarter-final in the Junior 2 grade.
