Clonmany's Patrick McDaid takes Ulster 9 County Novice title

Isla McShane of St John Bosco, Letterkenny’s Isla Larkin, Raphoe BC lad Harry Magee as well as three boxers from Dunfanaghy BC also had their hands raised in finals

Dunfanaghy Boxing Club boxers who took part in the Ulster Novice Championships

Dunfanaghy Boxing Club toasted a hat-trick of final wins at the Ulster 9 County Novice Championships on Saturday.

Odhran McCarry, Cathal Russell and Matthew Ferry were all victorious on a fine day at the office for the Dunfanaghy club.

Isla McShane of St John Bosco, Letterkenny’s Isla Larkin, Patrick McDaid from St Bridget’s, Clonmany and Raphoe BC lad Harry Magee also had their hands raised over the weekend.

At St Patrick’s College in Banbridge, McCarry overcame Lisburn’s Shea Scott to win the Boy 5 52kgs title. McCarry was handed a unanimous decision by the judges to take an excellent win.

Cathal Russell made it a case of double delight for Dunfanaghy BC when he earned a unanimous decision to see off Bryansford’s Ryan Magee in the Bay 6 60kgs decider.

A super Saturday was completed for Dunfanaghy in the Boy 6 63kgs final as Matthew Ferry ground out a fine win against Larne puncher Jak McLaughlin. Ferry was on the right side of a 2-1 split decision in a bout where the margins were thin.

McShane was too strong for Katelyn McKeown of Churchlands in the Girl 2 43kgs final, the St John Bosco ace given the nod by all judges.

Larkin took the verdict out of the hands of the judges. The Letterkenny BC boxer stopped Eva Simkova from Erne in the opening round of their Girl 4 49kgs final.

McDaid took the Boy 3 68kgs honours back to Clonmany after stopping All Saints’ Mark Mitchell in the first round of their clash.

On Friday night, at the Twin Towns BC tournament in Ballybofey, Raphoe BC’s Harry Magee defeated Mason Preston from Twin Towns, taking a second round stoppage to win the Boy 3 50kgs crown.

There were also walkover wins for: Katelyn O’Donnell (Dungloe, Girl 1 49kgs); Laura McHugh (St John Bosco, Girl 2 51kgs); Tegan McCarron (Carrigart, Girl 2 75+kgs); Noah Gallagher (St John Bosco, Boy 4 36kgs); Ellis O’Donnell (Dungloe, Girl 4 53kgs); Nathan Taylor (Twin Towns, Boy 6 54kgs); and Oleski Krytskyi (Illies Golden Gloves, Boy 6 80kgs).

On Saturday, there was defeat for St Bridget’s duo Shay Devlin and Brendan Doherty in the Boy 1 43kgs and Boy 4 42kgs finals against Michael Ward (Banbridge) and Oscar Cornellius (Townland).

Harry McBride of Dunfanaghy lost out to to Noah Kennedy (St Georges) in the Boy 3 56kgs final while in the Boy 6 79kgs decider, Oisin Martin of Twin Towns lost on a narrow 2-1 split decision to Darragh Gormley (St Canice’s).

The previous weekend, Tiernan McGinley (Dunfanaghy), Adam Walsh (Twin Towns), Hannah Lee Peoples (Raphoe), Faolan Caldwell (Carrigart), Caolan Keenan (Twin Towns) and Keelan Kearney (St Bridget’s) lost out in final.
