Fall denies Katie-George Dunlevy World Cup success in Belgium

The fall is a setback for the cyclist with strong Mountcharles connections but it is not expected to deter her on the journey to defend her Paralympic title in August

Fall denies Katie-George Dunlevy World Cup success in Belgium

Katie-George Dunlevy and Linda Kelly

A nasty fall denied Katie-George Dunlevy and Linda Kelly were denied the chance of success in the road race at the Para-cycling World Cup in Ostend, Belgium  at the weekend.

The pair took a nasty fall which ruled them out of the race on Sunday. Dunlevy picked up minor arm injuries while Kelly suffered concussion.

Katie-George is well known in Donegal and is a regular visitor to the home town of her father, John in Mountcharles.

Along with her pilot, she had come through the Time Trial on Friday in second place and were looking forward to a re-match with the British tandem team of Sophie Unwin and pilot Jenny Holl.

The British pair went on to win the Road Race when Dunlevy and Kelly took the fall. Conditions in Belgium at the weekend were poor with wind and rain with the Time Trial being cut back and there was a delay to the starting time.

It is expected that Katie-George will be fully recovered for the next World Cup event in Italy in a few weeks’ time but there is a question mark over Linda Kelly being available.

Thankfully, the setback has come early in the season in what is a big year with the Paralympics in Paris in August and the World Cup finals after that.
