Jon-Jo Doherty clocked a new course record to win the Ballyliffin Coastal Challenge on Saturday.

Beneath blue Easter skies, Glashedy island glistened as Doherty set a new fastest time over the 10 mile event.

The Finn Valley AC man edged a titanic battle with his namesake, Kyle Doherty, of City of Derry Spartans.

At the seven-mile mark, Kyle Doherty made a push and took the lead, but Jon-Jo Doherty overtook him and crossed the line on Pollan Strand in 54 minutes and 34 seconds.

The leading two runners were both faster than the previous course record of 54:52.

Kyle Doherty finished in 54:50 with Foyle Valley's Johnny Canning third in 59:10.

Ciara Toner of City of Derry Spartans was the female winner in 64:42 to retain her title from Emma Boyle from Craughwell (65:08) with Denise McCann from Ballycastle third (68:34).

Craughwell's Anthony Boyle won the seven-mile race in 46:09, ahead of John McConnell (RunHub) and Darragh Reynolds (Swinford) while Foyle Valley's Dolores Quinn was the lead female over seven miles, ahead of Nuala McDonough and Annalisa Mullan.

Over 1,100 entered with just shy of 1,000 taking to the start line.

Thousands of spectators lined the route and the beach with some of the participants running for charities or causes.

Fr Michael Sweeney officially started the race with one group running in memory of Alana Harkin, the Gleneely 18-year-old killed in a road traffic accident in November.
