St Bridget's, Clonmany boxers celebrate their wins.
Thirteen Donegal boxers were crowned champions at the Ulster 9 County Novice Championships for boys and girls 1,2 and 3 at the weekend.
The Championships were hosted by the Carrigart Boxing Club at the Downings GAA Club and the St Bridget’s club in Clonmany was toasting the arrival of four new champions.
Ronan Doherty from St Bridget’s stopped Carrickmore man Caolan Jordan to take the honours at Boy 1 38.5kgs.
That came just after Michael McGonigle of St Bridget’s defeated Fionnan Devlin thanks to a unanimous decision in the Boy 1 37kgs final. In Saturday’s semi-final, McGonigle saw off Sean Power of Twin Towns, the bout stopped in the third verse.
His club-mate Tyler McGonigle followed up soon after by landing the Boy 1 43kgs crown. McGonigle claimed an excellent unanimous decision to defeat Oliver Hill from Tullylish.
Patrick McDaid of the St Bridget’s club was one of eight Donegal boxers to get a walkover win from these Championships.
Carndonagh’s Riely Kelly edged the narrowest of 3-2 splits to get the Boy 2 59kgs title at the expense of Shea Higgins from Emerald.
Rocco McDaid, also boxing for Carndonagh BC, won an all-Inishowen final when overcoming Jake Curran of Illies.
With the Boy 3 59kgs title up for grabs, McDaid - who defeated Jack Barron of Twin Towns in a semi-final on Saturday - earned himself a clean sweep from the arbitrators at ringside. Curran had beaten Gabriel Ursu (North Down) on a 3-2 split the previous day.
John Gerard Ward was stopped in the third round of the Boy 2 76kgs final by CBBA’s Jay Simpson.
Three was no joy for Illies duo Hugh Duffy and Patrick Doherty in Boy 3 finals on Saturday with Duffy going down on a 4-1 split to Marcus Crymble from Cairnlodge at 46kgs and Charlie Matthews of Glengormley stopped Doherty in the second round pop their 76+kgs contest.
Walkovers: Harry McBride (Dunfanaghy, Boy 1 56kgs); Patrick McDaid (St Bridget’s, Boy 1 59kgs); Ava Bradley (Illies, Girl 1 39kgs); Cassie Lynch (Illies, Girl 1 43kgs); Danni Doherty (Letterkenny, Girl 1 46kgs); Roisin Hegarty (Illies, Girl 1 53kgs); Ross McDaid (Dunree, Boy 2 50kgs); Carys McFadden (Dunfanaghy, Girl 3 41kgs).
