Cahir Gormley, Cathal McLaughlin reach National Senior semi-finals

Boxers Cahir Gormley and Cathal McLaughlin have booked their spots in the semi-finals of the National Senior Championships.

Illies Golden Gloves puncher Gormley and McLaughlin, who represents Raphoe Boxing Club, won their respective quarter-final bouts at the weekend.

Gormley powered past Richard Phiri from Celtic Eagles at the National Stadium on Sunday. Gormley had his hand raised after being given a unanimous decision by the judges.

Gormley was an inside-the-distance winner on Saturday in his preliminary round bout. Gormley stopped Santry’s Christopher McCabe in the 67kgs opener.

The ever-stylish McLaughlin is through to the middleweight semi-finals.

McLaughlin claimed a slender 3-2 split decision win over Midleton’s Ola Wahab on Saturday. McLaughlin also had a split decision win in his quarter-final, although the margin was a rather more comfortable 4-1, to beat Peter Convery (St John’s, Derry).

Ballyshannon Boxing Club’s Alex McAleer cut a swathe through Daniel Diaz from Rush in his 63.5kgs preliminary round on Saturday.

McAllen won in the first round, but was beaten by Olympic’s Darren O’Connor on a UD in Sunday’s quarter-final.

Dunfanaghy woman Ciara Craig, boxing for Glengormley, lost out to Josefin Betist, representing the St Brigid’s club in Edenderry in a 60kgs semi. Dutchwoman Betist was an impressive victor and certainly looks like one to watch.

Letterknny BC’s Cillin Boyce had to withdraw from his 60kgs joust with John Gilligan from Ballinacarrow due to a back injury.

Meanwhile, following the elections to the Ulster Provincial Council, Carrigart’s James McCarron has been returned as the secretary.

Mandy Douglas of Letterkenny BC and Raphoe BC’s Peter O’Donnell have been elected as members with Derry’s Kevin Duffy to continue as the President.
