Moves to solve an issue with effluent polluting a stream that runs into Lough Foyle at Quigley's Point have been welcomed.

The Lough’s Agency carried out inspections at a septic tank at the West Point Manor housing estate in recent weeks after concerns were raised by locals. The agency has confirmed it has been liaising with the council about the issue.

Local councillor Terry Crossan said he has received commitments from the council that the septic tank will be emptied and shrubbery which has made access to the tank difficult will be cleared.

“The effluent has been causing serious concerns to the Loughs Agency for some time and could have had implications for estuarine ecosystems,” he said.

He hopes that the emptying of the tank can be carried out on an ongoing basis.

“I am pleased there has been some degree of progress and that it is being addressed. It will fill up again so until there is a more permanent arrangement, I would like an undertaking that it will be cleaned as often as necessary to ensure no effluent is going into the stream and eventually into the estuary.”
