Scam alert as HSE issues urgent warning over fake texts targeting people across Ireland

The HSE has issued a public warning after a rise in fraudulent text messages targeting people across Ireland.

According to the health service, there has been an increase in scam texts relating to HSE services with some messages seeking payment for medical card renewals.

In a clear warning, the HSE stressed: "HSE services do not ask for payment by SMS."

The organisation said it takes these scams seriously and is actively monitoring for fake websites and messages pretending to offer HSE-related services.

"If we find a scam website or are notified of a scam from the public, we take action to try to get the site taken down," the statement said.

Members of the public are being urged to remain cautious, particularly if they receive messages asking for payment or personal information.

"We would urge people stay vigilant on what texts they receive and remain cautious especially if it is asking for payment or personal details," the HSE added.

The public is also being reminded never to share sensitive information.

"Never give your bank details or PIN to someone over the phone or online."

Anyone concerned about a suspicious message is advised to contact HSELive on 1800 700 700 or report the matter to gardaí.

The HSE is also encouraging people to check in with others who may be more vulnerable.

"We would ask that members of the public make contact with any vulnerable friends or family to make them aware of these calls and text messages."
