ALERT: Risk of 'accidents and injuries' for climbers prompts unusual safety recall

Customers should stop using the product immediately.

A safety issue which has been identified with specialised climbing equipment has prompted a recall notice in Ireland and in several other countries.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission says the issue relates Petzl Laser Speed 10CM Ice Screws - a small number of which were sold in Ireland via Alpine Sports.

In a public notice, issued this Monday, it says there is a "risk of injuries as the product’s maximum pull-out strength is insufficient, potentially failing to support climbers adequately on ice, thereby increasing the risk of serious accidents and injuries."

Other common names for the product (pictured below) include ice anchor and ice piton.

The brand is Petzl. The model is G051AA0. The barcode is 3342540832695 and all batches are affected.

There are approximately 5 affected products in Ireland. The product was sold via retailer Alpine Sports, an outdoor clothing and equipment store, which has one shop located in Killorglin, Co Kerry, and has a successful online business.
