Gardaí have issued a warning to motorists about the dangers of touch screen interfaces in modern cars and stressed that distraction is a major cause of serious collisions.
"Recent media articles suggest that touch screen interfaces in modern cars may cause distraction to drivers using controls for heating, signalling and any other of a myriad of controls," An Garda Siochana outlined on social media.
"The Euro NCAP, a body that assesses new car safety ratings is suggesting that many systems detract from driver safety as there is a necessity to take one's eyes off the road far more so than using a conventional switch which is muscle memory," they outlined.
"A valid point possibly and as distraction is a major cause of serious collisions, something to be aware of.
"Just highlighting a point. At Motorway speeds you can travel 35 metres in one second so even that much time is too much.
Food for thought...." the garda post said.
