'It's just not fair' - Two out of seven puppies rescued by animal charity die from illness

'It's just not fair' - Two out of seven puppies rescued by animal charity die from illness

Two out of seven puppies rescued by an Irish animal charity have died.

My Lovely Horse Rescue (MLHR) announced the news on their Facebook page yesterday (December 14), confirming the deaths of babies Benny and Mario.

The group of dogs - named "the Kilkenny seven" - were rescued last week following an emergency run to Kilkenny to take them in.

At the time, MLHR stated: "We got a call early this morning about these dogs needing help, one only 5 months old with a broken leg. We of course made the two hour journey, heart breaking looking at seven little faces not knowing what is happening next.

"We don't have the room, resources! Everyone asking us for help, poor animals in need of emergency help constantly.

"Please help us, it’s got out of hand, we are struggling but so are all these poor animals. We need to have funds secured to keep going like we are. HELP."

In a post published on Facebook yesterday, MLHR confirmed Benny had died from the "same awful illness as poor Mario", however the charity did not elaborate on the nature of the illness.

They stated: "[Mario] had nearly one week of absolute love, adored by everyone. No human will be held accountable, another life gone. Sleep pain free baby Mario, you will always be part of the MLHR family. Heart breaking."

Following rescue, Mario was reportedly "frail and weak" with a belly full of worms.

He and Benny aren't the only animals to die this week from their previous neglect; alongside the puppies, a Chow Chow dog also passed away during an operation "to hopefully save her" and Darla the donkey was put to sleep because "laminitis was so severe and everything possible was done to help her".

A spokesperson called the week "horrible" and said, "We lost four lives including baby Mario this week. We are heart broken, so many tears have been shed this week, it's just not fair."

MLHR is seeking donations to help aid their ongoing rescue efforts.
