National: Motorists on major tourist route are being urged to turn sat-nav off

Motorists travelling along the Wild Atlantic Way are being advised not to use their sat-navs, as a sign pops up on one Mid-West route.

Clare County Council have erected a new sign, which has grabbed people’s attention on route one route to Kilrush on the R483 road, in the Brisla area. 

There are two signs, one ‘local access only’ and one stating ‘do not follow sat-nav’, warning people that sat navs can be misleading, amid reports of lost people who do not know the area, ending up on private property.

One person commented under a Wild Atlantic Way Facebook group’s post, saying: “We had the local council put up signage everywhere, because despite road signs telling people the way to a local attractions, people choose to follow their sat-nav and got stuck on our tiny roads, our gardens, end of roads without knowing how to work their cars”.

Another rejected the notion of the sign, saying: “Problem is, often there is no proper signage on Irish roads and no sign at junctions, so you have to rely on a sat-nav.”

While a person counteracted this opinion, saying: “That sign at the bottom should be on all roads everywhere. Useless things, [sat-navs] you're better off following your nose.”
