Future of Moville's St Patrick's Day parade under major threat

Public meeting organised to save long-running community event

Moville st patricks day sign

A sign promoting next year's St Patrick's Day parade in Moville has been covered with a 'cancelled' banner'.

An urgent appeal has been made as another one of Inishowen's St Patrick's Day parades is facing the chop.

The future of Moville's St Patrick's Day parade, which has been taking place since 1990, is under severe threat, according to organisers.

It follows fresh on the heels of the news that Buncrana narrowly avoided losing its own parade last month. A new committee was formed following a number of public meetings in the Lake of Shadows Hotel last month.

Moville's St Patrick's Day parade committee is now facing a similar scenario as the one facing Buncrana's.

Committee members have highlighted a number of issues, including advancing ages of its members and a lack of interest from the public.

In a statement issued by the committee, they expressed their “extreme disappointment” after just one person attended a previous public meeting to secure the parade's future.

“As a result the committee feel their only option is to cancel the proposed parade unless there is a positive result to our latest and final appeal for help,” the statement said.

In a last ditch attempt, organisers of the parade in the north Inishowen town are urging the local community to attend another public meeting in the Glencrow Hall this Friday (December 9) at 8pm to bring new ideas and save the parade from being cancelled permanently.

The committee stated that with the help of a few more people “there is no reason” why the parade would have to be cancelled

“All that is needed is for a few more people to come on board and make it happen,” the committee concluded.
