Wonderful night at the Coláiste Chinéal Eoghain open night

People spoke of how the Irish language can benefit students and their future

It was standing room only at Coláiste Chineál Eoghain on their open night which was held on Wednesday, November 23. The school which is situated in The Tullyarvan Mill has been open for 15 years and is the only Irish medium Post-Primary school in Inishowen.

There was an exciting atmosphere in the school as many past pupils returned for the first time to encourage potential students and parents to attend CCE. Parents and past pupils filled the hall to speak of their first-hand experience of the school and of the benefits of Irish medium education.

Past pupil and Game of Thrones actor, Art Parkinson, spoke of the positive impact the school had on him and how it fostered his love for the Irish language. Louise Lyons spoke of her experience as a parent and of someone with no previous knowledge of Irish. Irish Language Support Officer with Donegal ETB, Derval Newman, gave a presentation on the multiple benefits of attending an Irish language school.

Acting Principal, Claire Doherty, spoke of the excellent teaching and learning and student support CCE offers students because of the smaller numbers and pupil-teacher ratio. She also announced that all incoming first-year students would have their textbooks bought and paid for by the school for 2023 entry. Bus Éireann coordinates travel for any student living more than 4.8km from the school.

The Open Night was attended by Sinn Féin Cllr Terry Crossan, Cllr Albert Doherty, Cllr Jack Murray and Fianna Fáil Cllr Rena Donaghey.
