New €2m sea survival unit at Greencastle fisheries college moves forward

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue has confirmed significant progress in the project at the Greencastle facility

Contracts have been awarded for the construction of a new sea survival unit at Bord Iascaigh Mara’s National Training College in Greencastle.

The aim of the new sea survival unit, which is to cost almost €2m, is to significantly increase the professional level of maritime training that Bord Iascaigh Mara (BIM) provides.

Sea survival training is a mandatory form of training that every crew member of an Irish-registered fishing vessel must complete every five years.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Donegal TD Charlie McConalogue confirmed the significant progress by BIM in the project at the Greencastle facility, one of two such training colleges in the country.

The procurement process has been completed and contract award notices have been issued.

An enabling works contract has been awarded to local firm George Gill and Sons Construction Ltd and a contract for pool filtration design, supply, installation and commissioning has been awarded to Poolcourt Engineering Ltd.
