The mother of a six-year-old child who died in a road traffic collision in Carndonagh on Wednesday evening has also passed away.
The woman, who is in her 20s, had been transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast but passed away on Thursday afternoon.
The woman was the driver of a car which was involved in a collision with a van on the R240 at Carrowmore, Glentogher, Carndonagh at around 6.30pm on Wednesday.
The six-year-old girl was fatally injured in the collision.
Three others - the girl’s parents and her younger sister - were taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry.
The toddler is now being treated for what are described as non-life-threatening injuries at Royal Victoria Hospital.
A male front seat passenger, who is in his 30s, is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Altnagelvin Hospital, Derry.
No other injuries were reported.
The road was closed for a technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators and has since reopened.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.
A spokesperson said: “Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 6pm and 6.30pm on Wednesday 2nd July, 2025, are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Buncrana Garda Station at 074 932 0540, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
Carndonagh Councillor Albert Doherty said people are still trying to come to terms with the devastating consequences of the two-vehicle collision, which occurred close to an area known locally as ‘The Planting’, about three miles south of Carn town.
“We've lost a young loved one. We have three in the hospital, and our thoughts, our prayers, are with this poor family and extended family, hoping for a full recovery.”
“There was great anxiety and upset when we heard about another accident, and unfortunately, that was compounded when news began to filter through that there was a fatality, a young fatality.

“It’s really, really devastating to take on board that some family has lost a young loved one like this. I'm thinking of all the people who could be on that road from Quigley's Point to Carn, and they could be on their way home. But to lose somebody in those circumstances is awful.”
