From fares to prayers: Former bus driver turned Deacon has strong Inishowen links

A former Derry bus driver, who has been ordained as a Deacon, has strong Inishowen links.

Derry Diocese celebrated the ordination of Stephen Baxter to its Diaconate, following a ceremony in the city on Friday, June 27, the Feast of the Sacred Heart.

New Deacon Stephen was ordained by Bishop Donal McKeown at St Columb’s Church in Derry’s Waterside area.

His proud parents, Charlie and Sadie Baxter, who were among those in attendance, hail from the Newtowncunningham area of Inishowen.

Deacon Baxter has studied in Spain and Italy and will continue with his studies for another year or so before being ordained as a priest, likely in 2026.

During his training, he has already worked in a number of Inishowen parishes, including Moville and Buncrana.

Vicar General of the Derry Diocese Fr Michael Canny, a native of Urris, Clonmany, has warmly welcomed the newest addition to the local clergy.

“I am delighted on behalf of the Diocese to welcome Stephen Baxter as a deacon for our diocese. His ordination on Friday last was a significant step on his journey to priestly ordination, hopefully next year.”

“As a native of the Waterside parish, I have known Stephen for almost thirty years. He comes with a great deal of life experience, having worked as a bus driver and bus inspector for many years.”

Fr Canny added: “He has a tremendous love of people and works well with others.”
