The Strand Hotel in Ballyliffin
Inishowen TD Padraig MacLochlainn has said he’s “totally opposed” to any plans to convert a former hotel in Ballyliffin into an accommodation facility for those seeking international protection.
The Sinn Fein Deputy has revealed how he was aware of a recent application from the new owners of the Strand Hotel to turn it into an IPAS centre. The hotel closed to the public in October 2022 following the retirement of the previous owners.
Government officials have since confirmed that the Ballyliffin property is no longer under consideration as a centre for the International Protection Accommodation Service.

However, Deputy MacLochlainn says he’s now seeking an assurance that the owners will not be granted any future IPAS contracts.
“The community in Ballyliffin and Inishowen need to be heard. This can not go ahead,” he said.
The Sinn Fein TD has revealed how the owners of the hotel have applied to Donegal County Council for a planning exemption to use the building for temporary accommodation.
“I am aware of the application from the owners of the Strand Hotel, Ballyliffin to turn it into an IPAS Centre and I am totally opposed to it,” he posted.
“We are coping with a deep defective block crisis and Donegal has shouldered more centres for Ukrainian refugees and asylum seekers than any other county,” he added.
Deputy MacLochlainn said the relevant government department informed him that the former hotel was no longer being considered for an IPAS centre.
“A few weeks ago, I received the following response from the government officials who deal with IPAS centres,” he further explained. “The Community Engagement Team can confirm that the Department did receive an offer of accommodation in respect of the Strand Hotel, Ballyliffin, but the property is no longer under consideration.”
