Bail application possible in case of Donegal priest facing child sex charge

A Donegal-based priest charged with attempted sexual communication with a child has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court. 

Edward Gallagher (58) with an address at Orchard Park in appeared by Sightlink from Maghaberry Prison charged with attempted sexual communication with a child on dates between April 2 and April 17.

He did not speak during the short appearance.

A defence barrister, Stephen Chapman, told the court there were 'still some issues to be resolved' as regards a bail application. 

He said he had been in discussion with police and the prosecution about the issues. 

Mr Chapman asked that the defendant be produced on Friday, May 9 for a possible bail application.

The case was adjourned until May 9 for a possible bail application. 

Gallagher was the curate for the Camus, Clonleigh and Leckpatrick parishes - which include St Patrick’s Church in Murlog, Lifford - and he has been suspended from ministry in the wake of the allegation.
