This year's third annual ‘Cottages v Cottages’ football fundraiser in aid of the RNLI takes place on May 17.

This year, however, half of all the proceeds will go to a memorial in memory of Tiernan Doherty Kelly (TK#8), who sadly passed away in a car accident near Buncrana last December.

The fatal collision took place on the R244, known as the Mountain Road, between Buncrana and Carndonagh. The 18-year-old was the driver and sole occupant of the car that crashed. Tiernan was a past pupil of Carndonagh Community School. He was a key member of the senior Carn FC soccer team, winning the treble with them two years ago.

Organiser of the Cottages v Cottages match, Lee Farren, said the event is for a great charity and cause.

“Tiernan was very well-known; from a young age, he played a lot of sports. He holds a special place in all of our hearts. A lot of his family members will be playing in this. It is a good tribute from them.”

Tiernan’s former coach and teammate, Lorcan Bradley at Carn FC, echoed the views of Mr Farren.

“Tiernan was a great lad and this is a great cause. I know if anything like this was happening, Tiernan would have been the first person to support it.”

Other events have taken place in recent months to remember the popular teen too, including the annual Carndonagh to Malin St Patrick’s Day walk.

The Cottages V Cottages football fundraiser is a double-header at St. Patrick's Park, Carndonagh on Saturday, May 17. The ladies' match kicks off at 3pm, followed by the men's an hour later at 4pm.
