Donegal County Council has been allocated almost €19 million for its national roads.

The funding is part of an overall package of €633 million announced today by the Minister for Transport, Darragh O'Brien.

A total of €6 million has been earmarked for phase two of the section along the N56 from Letterilly to the Kilraine Junction in Glenties, €2 million will be spent on the TEN-T route improvement, while €1.7 million has been committed to the Lurgybrack to Listillion pavement in Letterkenny.

Donegal Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue said of the funding allocation of €18.78 million: "Our roads are a key part of the county's infrastructure and it's extremely important that they are maintained and improved on a regular basis.

“This latest funding announcement allows Donegal County Council to continue its excellent work and ensuring that our roads are kept as safe as possible.

“The funding will also help in relation to improving connectivity and supporting the economic development of the region. Donegal has received the fourth highest allocation in the country after Roscommon, Limerick and Cork.

"This announcement comes just three weeks after Donegal County Council was allocated €4.27 million for Greenways and National Roads Active Travel infrastructure, bringing the overall investment in Donegal's roads in 2025 to over €23 million.”

The funding has also been hailed by Donegal TD Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher.

Some €502 million of Exchequer Capital funds for national roads is being allocated through Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in 2025, while an additional €98 is being provided for National Roads under Public Private Partnerships.

A separate allocation of approximately €33 million is being provided to local authorities for regular maintenance of National Roads.

The funding of €633 million is an increase of €92 million on the funding provided in 2024. In addition to today’s funding announcement, national road funding under the current NDP is set to increase throughout the remainder of the decade.
