Long-time Lough Swilly Lifeboat Station coxswain George O’Hagan will retire this week.

The Buncrana man will hang up the pager after 36 years of incredible service having been involved from the formative days of the station, which was first established as an inshore station by the RNLI in 1988.

He is set to retire on New Year’s Eve.

Throughout his time with the RNLI, George has played a vital role in countless rescues, saving dozens of lives and earning the respect and admiration of his crew.

Lough Swilly RNLI said in a statement: “Over the past few days, heartfelt tributes have poured in, with one remark standing out: George is truly the heartbeat of our station.

“George, your presence and leadership will be deeply missed. We extend our best wishes to you, Kathryn, James, and Jack as you begin this new chapter. Thank you for your unwavering service.”

Lough Swilly RNLI posted a video of a radio message conveyed from the Malin Head Coastguard.

Malin Head Coastguard saluted his “unwavering dedication bravery and countless lives impacted”. They added: “You’re a true lifesaving legend and we wish you fair winds and calm seas on your next journey.”
