New initiative to support family carers in Inishowen

Sixty family carers in Inoshowen are set to benefit from Care4Carers

A new initiative, which aims to support unpaid carers through personal development and mentoring, is set to be rolled out in Inishowen next year.

Care4Carers is a new tailor-made programme designed by Inishowen Development Partnership (IDP) and funded by the Department of Social Protection through the Dormant Accounts Action Plan 2024.

Sixty family carers are set to benefit from Care4Carers, which offers opportunities for those involved in informal unpaid caring to connect and reconnect into their local community and to feel valued.

Joint CEO of IDP Shauna McClenaghan welcomed the news of the funding.

She explained that Care4Carers has been specifically designed by IDP staff members who have identified the need to support unpaid and often under-valued home carers.

SICAP team lead for IDP Sinead McDaid said they are delighted to get the programme over the line and work as already begun on planning how best to support the family carers.

“We aim to support 60 local families and carers throughout the course of this two-year programme, through personal development, mentoring, coaching and health & wellbeing initiatives,” stated Sinead.

“It is about connecting and creating opportunities for carers to gather and develop as well as feel supported and valued.

“We will be engaging with local employers to help provide valuable work experience and training in preparation for their next chapters.

Shauna explained that the successful funding application came about as a result of a lot of staff involvement through IDP’s SICAP Employment Support and Health and Wellbeing teams.

“Our staff have hands-on experience of working with this sector over the years and we will feel that Care4Carers will help empower and provide the practical supports required for carers to remain in or re-enter work and education.

“We look forward to seeing the results of the programme over the next two years,” added Shauna.
