Gardai and the RSA conduct a checkpoint in Donegal on Monday
Two vehicles were seized by Gardaí in Donegal during Tyre Safety Day on Monday.
Gardai who were operating checkpoints alongside the Road Safety Authority found the vehicles to have had dangerously defective tyres.
The vehicles were seized following inspection by RSA enforcement officers as they were found to have excessively worn tyres which did not meet the minimum tread requirement.
Tyre Safety Day was conducted as part of Road Safety Week.
A number of Fixed Charge Penalty Notices were also issued to drivers across Donegal because of defective tyres on their vehicles. Other penalty notices were issued in respect of various other road traffic offences including no NCT, no tax and no insurance.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Please check your tyres regularly and even more regularly when the tread depth reaches 3mm. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm.
“The more worn your tyres become, the less grip they will have on the road surface. This is even more important now as we approach the Winter season and the icy roads.
“Motorists, please ensure that the lights on your car, motorcycle, tractor, van etc. are all in good working order. For those who have trailers, please ensure that the lights and reflectors are all in place and that they are in good working condition.”
