Small earthquake recorded off Donegal coast

A micro-earthquake was recorded off the Donegal coast in the early hours of Tuesday.

The quake, registering 0.9 pm the Richter scale, was recorded off the coast at Culdaff Bay.

Two seismometers at St Columba’s College in Stranorlar both recorded the activity.

The quake was recorded at 2.18am. Stations of the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) and the British Geology Survey’s Seismology team recorded the event.

Science teacher Brendan O'Donoghue, who was instrumental in St Columba's joining the international Seismology in Schools network, shared the readings from the stations in Stranorlar.

As well as recording earthquakes, St Columba's contributes to international monitoring bodies for things like nuclear tests.

Although small, the quake is part of ongoing seismic monitoring in this region, providing valuable data for further geological studies.
