There will be 91 candidates seeking to get one of the 37 Donegal County Council seats on offer at this June’s county council elections on June 7. They take place on the same day as the European Parliament Elections.

Nominations closed in Lifford on Saturday afternoon at 12 noon.

Tributes were paid at Monday's last plenary session of the 2019-2024 county council to three serving councillors, who lost their lives over the duration of the council,  the late Cllrs Noreen McGarvey, Manus Kelly and Bernard McGuinness.

Not surprisingly, the latest number of candidates next month will be competing for a seat in the Letterkenny Local electoral area where 18 candidates will stand.

There are seven LEA’s which then sit on five municipal districts (MD) as well as a full plenary council on a monthly basis.

The Letterkenny and Milford LEA’s sit as one MD as do Buncrana and Carndonagh.

The political party with the largest number of candidates will be Sinn Féin presenting 18 candidates with Fianna Fail running 15 candidates.

The number of candidates in each LEA are:

Buncrana LEA 12 candidates

Carndonagh LEA 9 candidates

Donegal LEA 15 candidates

Glenties LEA 16 candidates

Letterkenny LEA 18 candidates

Lifford Stranorlar 12 candidates

Milford LEA 9 candidates
