Over €1million worth of drugs have been seized in Donegal since the start of 2024.

The statistic was revealed by Garda Chief Superintendent Goretti Sheridan in a presentation to the Joint Policing Committee on Friday.

The overall figure includes two recent finds, one of €125,000 of cannabis in the Milford District and also more than €600,000 of cannabis in a growhouse in Donegal Town in February.

The figure also includes numerous other smaller amounts of various drugs including cocaine, heroin and MDMA following undercover Garda operations at various locations across the county.

The escalation in drugs finds coincides with the re-establishment of the local Garda Drugs unit in the county.

Chief Superintendent Sheridan said the finds "shows the benefit of having the drugs unit working on the ground."

A number of people are currently before the courts in connection with some of these finds.

Chairperson of the Joint Policing Committee, Councillor Gerry McMonagle echoed these sentiments.

He said: "Drugs have to be a huge priority for us and these finds show the amount of drugs both across the country and country.

“These are significant finds since the drugs unit was put back together again locally."

Members of the JPC commended Gardai on their continuing fight against the scourge of drugs in the county at Friday's meeting.
