The proceeds raised from a St Patrick’s Day charity walk from Carndonagh to Malin town held in memory of 19-year-old Carndonagh man Shane Toye raised over €8,000 each for two local charities.

The walk took place on Shane’s 20th anniversary with monies raised going to the Donegal branch of the Irish Kidney Association and the Friends of Inishowen Hospice.

Shane’s mother Sally said the family were honoured that the walk was being held in his memory and they were delighted that the two charities could benefit.

“We are absolutely delighted to hand over the proceeds of the St Patrick’s Day Walk which was in memory of our precious son Shane,” Sally posted on behalf of the family - Gerry, Lisa and Kerry.

“The total amount raised was an amazing €16,032 so our two chosen charities each got € 8,016. Firstly the Irish Kidney Association, Donegal Branch - as I’m sure you all know, organ donation plays a massive role in our lives as we donated Shane’s organs and have seen what an amazing thing the Gift Of Life is, passing on life to others after your life is gone and indeed through living donations too.

“Secondly to the Friends of Inishowen Hospice, they do amazing work helping local families here in Inishowen who are dealing with illness. “We’d like to thank everyone again for all the support we got while doing this, from the people who took sponsor cards, to bucket collectors, to the donators and to everyone who took the time to join us on that very wet St. Patrick’s Day to walk with us. Lastly thanks to Sheila Davenport, Bernie McDonough, Jim Coyle and James Anthony for all their help and also telling me ‘Sally don’t worry everything takes care of itself’.”
