Speed detection leads Donegal gardai to drug-driver

The motorist, who was clocked at 126km/h, tested positive for cocaine and was one of several speeding drivers detected on Donegal's roads on National Slow Down Day.

A motorist in Letterkenny was arrested for drug-driving on Friday night – after a speeding detection drew the attention of gardai.

The Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit were on duty in the Dromore area at the time.

Officers detected a vehicle travelling at 126km/h on a road governed by a 100km/h speed limit.

The driver failed a roadside test, which showed positive for the presence of cocaine.

The motorist was subsequently arrested.

Gardai from the various Roads Policing Units in Donegal had a busy day on Friday as part of National Slow Down Day.

A GoSafe operator clocked one vehicle travelling at 132km/h at Teevickmoy, Stranorlar on the N13, governed by a 100km/h speed limit.

Another motorist was caught driving at 127km/h, also on the N13 at Listillion, Letterkenny.

The Donegal Town Roads Policing issued a fixed charge penalty notice to a driver detected at 122km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N15.

FCPNs were issued by Buncrana Roads Policing Unit gardai drivers who were detected travelling at 114km/h and 104km/h in a speed zone of 80km/h in the St. Johnston area. These drivers will now receive a fine of €160 and three penalty point.
