With around half the ballot boxes opened by 12 noon, it looks at though Donegal will returning a resounding No in both the Care and Family Referendums.

This is in keeping with indications nationally.

Counting is continuing the Aura Centre, Letterkenny. And while there is a great buzz of activity among the 60 or people involved in the count inside the barriers, there is a marked absence of local representatives and other interested parties.

Bar a handful of people, a few reporters and a number of gardaí, the non-count portion of the large sports hall feels remarkably empty. It is a far cry from previous referendums where there was a strong presence of the people on both sides who had carried out a determined campaign in the lead up, and for whom so much hung in the balance on count day.

It is expected that the count will be completed by mid to late afternoon.
