Sinn Féin councillor Albert Doherty is to defend his seat in the Carndonagh electoral area in June’s local elections with the party due to add another candidate to the ticket
Doherty was selected by local party members in the Carndonagh and north Inishowen area at a meeting of the Carndonagh-Malin cumann.
The Carndonagh councillor was elected on the third count in the four-seat electoral area in 2019 with almost 16% of the first preferences. His selection comes after the party selected three candidates to run in the Buncrana electoral area. Sitting councillors Jack Murray and Terry Crossan will be running along with Niamh McGuinness.
“It has been a true honour and privilege to represent and work for the people of Inishowen over the years,” he said.
“I am very grateful to the members of Sinn Féin in north Inishowen for putting their trust in me again. I look forward to the election campaign ahead, meeting, listening and working for our people and local communities.”
Donegal TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said the party will be running two candidates in the Carndonagh electoral area, five in Inishowen and 18 across Donegal.
“This is our largest and strongest team of candidates ever and evidence of our determination to bring real and positive change for the people in Donegal in the local elections in June and in the Dáil election that will be only months later.
“Whether it is the delivery of housing and genuine 100% redress for our families living in defective block homes, our health system or a range of crucial issues for our people, this government has failed again and again.
“Our party will lay out our plans and our solutions to these issues in the months ahead and we look forward to the decision of our people in the forthcoming elections.”
