Jack Murray says he wants to keep fighting for Inishowen and its people.

The Sinn Féin Councillor has been confirmed as a candidate for the upcoming local elections.

Councillor Murray was endorsed by the officer board of the Sinn Féin Buncrana cumann at a meeting in the Lake of Shadows Hotel on Thursday night.

"I am immensely proud to have been nominated to contest the local elections on behalf of Sinn Féin,” he said.

“This is not something I take lightly. Representing the people of Inishowen has been the honour of a lifetime to me. It has been chaotic, hectic, and sometimes stressful - but I've loved it.

“I love this community and I believe in it. There is absolutely nowhere else that I'd rather raise my daughter or to live with my family. It is the most beautiful place on earth with some of the finest people in it.

“It has been overlooked, ignored and forgotten by successive governments for a century. I want to continue to fight for our place to reach its potential.”

Murray was co-opted onto Donegal County Council in 2011 to replace Pádraig Mac Lochlainn following his election as a TD.

Murray was returned in the 2014 and 2019 elections, polling just shy of 1,500 first preferences each time.

The Buncrana native said: “In this campaign I'll be running as part of the largest Sinn Féin team ever put forward in Donegal. Our electoral strategy is ambitious, as that is what's needed if we want to achieve change. This, of course, will come with risks so we'll need every vote possible if we are to succeed.

“Along with others, I want to fight for a real and accessible 100% redress scheme for defective block homeowners, to deliver our new leisure centre, newvschool builds, increased housing supply and to stand up for ordinary workers.

“Though regularly knocking on doors anyway, I'm excited to soon be calling with party activists while also asking for support."

Further Sinn Féin candidates across the Inishowen peninsula will be confirmed in the coming days.
