Carndonagh Tidy Town volunteers carry out a range of work to help the town look its best
Carndonagh Tidy Town is seeking more volunteers and new ideas to help the town to continue to improve.
The group has been improving the appearance of the town since July 1997 through a range of work such as putting up colourful hanging baskets throughout the summer, planting flowers and shrubs, weeding and mowing, painting walls and fences and making repairs where necessary.
The group organises litter-picking in the town with CE workers on weekdays and a rota of volunteers at weekends.
It also fundraises for new summer benches and works with other groups such as Scouts and CCS students to plant trees and paint as well as raising awareness of environmental issues and lobbying to bring in changes.
Anyone who is interested in helping is asked to attend the group’s annual general meeting on Monday, February 12 at 7.30 pm, in Mickey McClure’s Bar on Bridge Street.
“We plant, we water, we weed, we paint, we tidy, we repair, we mow, we pick litter, we provide new seats, and we need more help,” committee member Rosemary Doherty said.
“We are constantly seeking new ways to improve things and are keenly aware that we have not fully tapped into all the skills that are available within our community.
“We need help in a variety of areas from advice on choosing plants to painting a wall; from liaising with other organisations, to weeding; from organising a litter rota to ordering more litter pickers. Many people can play a small role and make a huge difference.
“We look forward to seeing some new faces. All contributions of help will be much appreciated and you will be helping to make Carn a better place in which to live, work and play.”
She also paid tribute to “long-standing and extremely hard-working member” of the group, Martin Robins, who has taken a step back for a well-deserved break from his duties on the committee.
“He has been a key member of the group since its very beginning,” Rosemary said.
“He has served tirelessly as secretary for many years carrying out tasks above and beyond the call of duty. He has spent endless hours liaising with other groups including the county council and brought about many positive changes. He has seen Carndonagh rise through the ranks of the Tidy Towns competition and has always taken a huge amount of pride in the appearance of the town. We thank him sincerely for his efforts and hope that he will still be on the sidelines to guide us through the next stage.”
Anyone who is interested in helping but cannot attend the AGM is asked to send a message through Carndonagh Tidy Town Facebook page or contact Grainne on 0868580283.
