Donegal Boxing was this week in mourning following the death of Jackie McMonagle.
A former President and Secretary of the County Donegal Boxing Board, he was a long-time servant to the sweet science.
A native of Moville, he was involved in the former Moville Boxing Club and was also a part of Carndonagh Boxing Club for a time.
He later joined the Kildress Boxing Club in County Tyrone.
A well respected referee and judge, Jackie was the President of the County Donegal Boxing Board in 1998 and 1999, succeeding Peter O’Donnell and passing the mantle on to Gerry Daly.
During his Presidency, Jackie led a Donegal boxing team for a tournament in Cumbernauld, Scotland.
Future Irish Elite champion William McLaughlin was among the winners on the night, beating Mark Campbell. Kevin Lowther of St John Bosco and Raphoe’s Jason Ward also won while the team also contained the likes of Barry Gillespie (Twin Towns), Eddie McCafferty (Convoy) and Letterkenny BC duo Mark McCauley and Martin Glackin.
County Donegal Boxing Board Secretary James McCarron said the Board was ‘very saddened to hear of the passing of a great Donegal boxing member’.
