Emergency services attended the fires but no injuries have been reported
Three houses in the Newtowncunningham area have been badly damaged after being struck by lightning.
The houses were damaged by fire after the lightning strikes on Monday afternoon. Emergency services attended the fires but no injuries have been reported.
One of the houses, located close to Inisleigh Co-op, was still on fire late on Monday afternoon.
Local county councillor Paul Canning said two of the houses suffered extensive fire damage.
“One of the houses still remains on fire whilst the other house has been brought under control,” he said.
“The third house has received internal damage where some electrical appliances have been blown to bits. All residents have been badly shook but are ok.”
A status yellow thunderstorm warning for Donegal was in place for most of Monday afternoon with Met Éireann warning of thunderstorms bringing hail and heavy downpours.
Lightning strikes are understood to have caused additional power cuts to parts of Inishowen on Monday afternoon in the wake of Storm Isha. Work is underway to restore power across the peninsula but it is expected some localised faults may not be repaired until Wednesday.
