Nineteen motorists were arrested in Donegal for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs over the festive period.
Six of those arrests were made between New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, it has been confirmed.
From December 20 to January 1, 12 drivers were arrested for drink-driving while seven were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.
Between New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, gardai in Donegal made five arrests for drink-driving and one for drug-driving.
Several other road traffic offences were detected by gardai during the same period, the largest volume of these being for speeding.
Gardai are appealing to road users to put road safety at the top of their New Year’s resolutions list.
Garda Gráinne Doherty, the media co-ordinator in the Donegal Garda Division, said: “There are too many lives being lost and too many life-altering injuries being sustained on our roads. A certain percentage of these could be prevented.
“We are asking people to be mindful of road safety. It is time to be honest with ourselves and realise the mistakes we are making on the roads. We are asking everyone to make a big effort.”
Gardai are asking motorists to slow down, belt up, to never ever drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, not to hold a mobile phone while driving and to ensure that the vehicle is road worthy.
Pedestrians are also urged to be highly visible when walking.
