Local Garda bosses hope to have a new Superintendent allocated to the Buncrana District shortly.

Chief Superintendent Aidan Glacken has confirmed that a request has been made to have a recent vacancy filled.

Superintendent Barry Doyle transferred to Sligo in early October. In January, he succeeded Goretti Sheridan as Superintendent in the Buncrana District.

There are now three Superintendents in the Donegal Garda Division: Karen Doyle in Ballyshannon, Goretti Sheridan in Letterkenny and David Kelly in Milford.

Chief Superintendent Glacken has asked Garda Commissioner Drew Harris that the void in Buncrana be addressed.

At a meeting of the Donegal Joint Policing Committee (JPC) on Friday, Chief Superintendent Glacken was asked about the makeup of the Donegal Division.

“There are currently three Superintendents, but none in Buncrana,” he said in response to a query from Donegal JPC Chairperson, Councillor Gerry McMonagle.

“My desire is that there will be one allocated and I have made that request.”

Donegal is to return to a standalone Garda Division next year and a permanent Chief Superintendent will be allocated to the county. Chief Superintendent Aidan Glacken also oversees the Sligo-Leitrim Division at present.

The meeting heard that there are 432 personnel, including 362 gardai, employed in the Donegal Garda Division at the moment.
