The Clonmany area has been subjected to repeated water supply disruption in recent years
Work is underway on pipe replacement in the Clonmany area which has been beset by disruption to supply in recent years.
Uisce Éireann has confirmed that work on replacing old water mains which are susceptible to regular bursts and high levels of leakage got underway in Gaddyduff on August 16.
The work follows complaints from local representatives about the impact on the local community of ongoing disruptions.
Uisce Éireann announced in June that a programme of works would begin in July which it says will help put a stop to ongoing bursts, outages and leakage in the area.
A meeting in the Clonmany community centre in June heard locals express frustrations about repeated outages in the Urris and Clonmany areas in recent months.
Uisce Éireann said it is estimated that more than 800 metres of old water mains, which are susceptible to regular bursts and high levels of leakage, will be replaced as part of the works in both Gaddyduff and Straid.
Farrans Construction has been contracted to carry out the works, which are due to be completed in October.
Local councillor Albert Doherty welcomed the commencement of the works.
“The works programme will reduce the unacceptable number of outages that has for too long affected families and householders in the area,” he said.
