Buncrana still in a flap over nuisance seagulls

The coastal town is fighting back - they are going to put up signs!

Buncrana still in a flap over nuisance seagulls

Buncrana's seagull problem back again

People are still feeding into Buncrana's seagull problem and there’s no sign of it getting any better.

It appears visitors to the town’s beaches and parks are distributing their leftovers to the winged menace and even though it is accepted the gulls are an important part of the coastal environment, their behaviour is continuing to be problematic.

The issue was raised at the recent Inishowen Municipal District meeting but it appears solutions are thin on the ground.

Local councillor Cllr Rena Donaghey repeated her concerns saying several people had complained about the number of seagulls in Buncrana and particularly at Lisfannon that were causing damage to properties and just generally being a nuisance.

She asked that signs be erected asking the public not to feed the seagulls because this was adding to the problem. Some of her colleagues have on previous occasions also raised concerns about birds scavenging from bins around the town.

Cllr Donaghey ask what progress, if any, had been made on foot of her earlier request for action and repeated her call for signs to be erected.

"People are coming with bags and bags of food and just dumping it," she claimed.

The meeting was told the issue would be passed on to their litter warden for action.

Locals are now waiting to see if sign-reading seagulls or those feeding them will take the hint!
